St. Paul Outside the Walls
After being almost totally destroyed by an 1823 fire, this major basilica was rebuilt in glorious classically Romanesque fashion. It is one of the Vatican's four patriarchal churches, and was originally built over the site of Paul's tomb in the year 324. The stunning interior features acres of marble paving, endless colonnades, and mosaic portraits of all the popes from Peter to Francis...and space is running out.
